The building of the Mother Church entitled to de Madonna
of the Providance happened in two phases.
The first time it was finished in 1735.
The second time, after the eartquake in 1818 which destroyed it,
the works began in 1832 and finished in 1837, imprinting to the
church an aspect almost corrisponding to the present one.
The façade in white stone of Syracuse started in 1897 on
a project of the architect Sciuto Patti was finished in 1928now
the church, in baroque style, given again to the cult in 1997 after
the earthquake of 1984 that had made it impraticable, has got two
twin bell towers and arises on an impressive curvilinear black stone
stairway contrasting the façade in white stone. Inside it
there is an altar piece by the painter Giuseppe Sciuti, coming back
to the young period, which portrays “St. James with the Child”.
Madonna of the Graces Church
The Madonna of the Graces Church
was originally built in 1914 with wood board, on a private property
when the town was hit by the earthquake. Later, after having given
the terrain to the township, the building works started that brought
to the costruction of the external facade and the perimeter walls,
finished bettween 1951 and 1952. After a long break the works took
back between 1991 and 1992. The church opened again to the cult
has been blessed in December 1995. The external façade, in
liberty style, presents a niche housing the Madonna of the Graces
statue.
